Located on the coast of the Riviera di Ponente, Noli is a typical seaside village whose historic center is a treasure chest full of treasures that, enclosed in the medieval walls, tell its past as a strong and proud Fifth Maritime Republic, always allied with nearby Genoa.
Today it shows its tourists the beautiful towers, the castle overlooking the city, the cathedral and all the palaces and monuments of great historical and artistic value.

Noli is a charming Italian Riviera fishing town that’s one of the Borghi piu Belli d’Italia, most beautiful villages of Italy.
Its sandy beaches have been designated as blue flag beaches so they’re clean and safe for swimming. A castle sits on a hill above town and the picturesque historic center once held 73 towers (one more than San Gimignano) but only a few remain.
Noli is a great place for a relaxing stroll along the seaside promenade or along the narrow streets of the small historic center where you’ll find shops and restaurants. During highs season, beach establishments run along the sea and there are good places for swimming or sun-bathing. Small fishing boats still head out to sea and there’s a stall along the promenade where the fishermen sell their catch.
Entering through Porta di Piazza, the town gate near the sea, the Loggia della Repubblica is a covered walkway to one side that was large enough to hold boats in times of danger. The clock tower dates from the 13th century and the Palazzo del Comune is from the 15th century. The cathedral is Baroque style and there are several small churches to see in or near the town center.
The stunning Romanesque Church of San Paragorio, just outside the historic center, is the town’s top monument. Dating from the 11th century, it’s one of the oldest and best preserved churches in Liguria. Tombs outside the church go back even farther and the crypt underneath is thought to be from the 8th century. Roman ruins are next to the church.
Above town is the castle, Castello di Monte Ursino, built in the 10th century as a defense from Saracen raids.
Hiking trails criss-cross the hills, offering fantastic views of the coast. One trail goes from the side of town opposite the castle to the ruins of Santa Margherita and San Lazzaro Churches and continuing back down to the coast at Capo Noli.

The town existed in the period of the Roman domination.
It that time was called Naboli. Then in the V century, it was completely destroyed by Lombards.
After that, it was rebuilt and became a maritime power (!).
It had also its own navy and was independent of Genoa.
The town took a part even in the First Crusade! At the end of the XVIII century became a part of the Ligurian Republic that was created by Napoleon and after that was included in the United Italy.
The most interesting part of Noli is its old town.
It is located along SS1 Aurelia and has very well preserved Medieval walls. You enter the town through one of town gates. Inside the old town, you will see many narrow, lovely streets that lead to a square Piazza Morando. There you can see Oratorio di Sant’Anna (Oratory of Saint. Anna)

Noli è situata sulla costa della Riviera di Ponente, in un'insenatura chiusa a est dall'Isola di Bergeggi e a sud-ovest dal capo omonimo alla foce del torrente Luminella.
Il territorio comunale è costituito, oltre che dal capoluogo, dall'unica frazione di Tosse - collocata sul versante meridionale del Bric delle Rive a 285 m s.l.m. - e dalla località di Voze per una superficie territoriale di 9,67 km².
Confina a nord con il comune di Spotorno, a sud con Finale Ligure, ad ovest con Vezzi Portio e ad est è bagnato dal mar Ligure.

Noli Ligure borgo marinaro
Noli vanta una importante storia: fu municipio sin da epoca romana e nel 1099 con una considerevole flotta navale partecipò alla prima crociata.
Dal 1192 al 1797 fu capitale della Repubblica di Noli, legata alla Repubblica di Genova.
L’importanza della sua flotta navale la portò a combattere con la Repubblica di Genova contro Pisa e Venezia.
I privilegi acquisiti dai cittadini di Noli permisero al borgo da costituirsi Comune Libero.
Nel 1798, come accadde a tutta la Liguria ed a tanta parte dell’Italia, fu occupata dalle truppe napoleoniche che ne estinse l’autonomia.
Nel 1861 fu annessa a Regno di Sardegna, per confluire nel Regno d’Italia.

Il territorio d questo comune fa parte della Comunità Montana Pollupice.
Il suo borgo medievale è considerato uno dei borghi liguri più belli d’Italia e tradizionalmente importante centro marinaro.
Questa località è infatti un centro rinomato per il duo suggestivo antico borgo marinaro, con strette viuzze, i tipici carüggi.
Quello nolese è rimasto uno dei pochi borghi costieri ad avere ancora oggi pescatori locali che ogni notte escono in mare con le loro piccole barche a motore e tornano la mattina con il pescato freschissimo.
Oggi Noli è un’importante stazione balneare della Riviera di Ponente, con bellissime spiagge con sabbia bianca.
Inoltre, il mare di Noli è particolarmente adatto per le immersioni.
I fondali, che superano i 35 metri di profondità sono ricchi di pesci, cavallucci marini, calamari, rane pescatrici e piccole aragoste, solo.
La limpidezza dell’acqua permette anche riprese subacquee.

Camminare per le vie ed i caruggi del borgo antico significa immergersi nella ricca storia del comune ligure grazie agli edifici simbolici del suo passato sopravvissuti fino ai giorni nostri.
Arrivando dall’Aurelia, si nota subito la cinta muraria di Noli, in primis quella che parte dal castello che domina il monte Ursino. Esplorando il centro storico si può vedere come il sistema delle mura sia perfettamente integrato nell’intricato tessuto urbano della località.
Un altro elemento che la contraddistingue è la presenza delle torri medievali.
Oggi, quelle superstiti testimoniano il massimo splendore raggiunto tra il XIII ed il XIV secolo, quando la Repubblica marinara ne aveva addirittura 70 sparse lungo le mura difensive.
Di forma trapezoidale, spicca ad esempio la Torre dei quattro canti, alta 38 m. Dopodiché, la Torre comunale è giunta a noi pressoché intatta e la si riconosce per i merli a coda di rondine. Come lascia intendere il suo nome, è annessa al Palazzo Comunale che sorge affacciato sul lungomare e fu sede dell’antica Repubblica di Noli. Da qui, i due archi laterizi che poggiano sulla colonna ottogonale – elemento tipico dell’architettura tra fine ‘300 ed inizio ‘400 – conducono alla Loggia della Repubblica.
Mentre si cammina sull’antico ciottolato, osservando le lapidi appese si scoprono alcuni dei personaggi famosi passati da queste parti: tra tutti, Dante Alighieri, che cita Noli nella Divina Commedia (per la precisione nel Purgatorio), Cristoforo Colombo, appena prima di partire per il Portogallo nel 1476 e Giordano Bruno nel 1576.

The region is home to its own breed of artichokes, carciofo spinoso di Albenga – which are native to the Mediterranean basin and star in many of the local dishes. With a spiky exterior and soft, tender hearts, they are often eaten raw – shaved into salads and seasoned with Parmesan.
The mountains of western Liguria are filled with wild herbs, which sustained the region’s farmers for millennia and are thus found in many traditional recipes. Familiar greens such as dandelions, watercress, rosemary and sage grow in abundance, and there’s a vast array of exciting plants of less renown – pettine di Venere (an intense fennel-like herb), Pimpinella (with flavours of walnut and anise) and grespino (a bitter salad green), to name but a tiny selection.
Speciality pastas with all kinds of fillings, shapes and sauces grace every restaurant menu and are served regularly at home, with each small town and village proclaiming its own favourites. Sauces like the famous basil pesto alla genovese, made withLiguria’s prized basilico Genovese DOP and the creamy salsa di noci, rich with walnuts, cheese and cream. Popular pasta shapes include corzetti, discs of fresh pasta stamped with patterns and designs, or trofie – thin, twisted spirals of pasta typically served with pesto.
Like many regions of Italy, Ligurian cuisine reflects the history and people of the land.
A history of hardship, but one which bore the creative, healthy and lip-smackingly delicious vegetable-based dishes still eaten today.

Oltre ad essere stazione balneare e climatica della riviera è un pittoresco centro peschereccio ed è un luogo speciale per scoprire i prodotti tipici liguri, le eccellenza Dop e Igp e per mangiare specialità a base di pesce.

I Cicerelli (che in zona si chiamano anche cicciarelli, lussi o lussotti) sono una tipicità tutta locale.
Si tratta di un pesce azzurro quasi “dimenticato”, che vive in banchi numerosi da sempre una delle prede più ghiotte per i pescatori locali. Per pescarlo, ancora oggi si ricorre a metodi tradizionali, come la pesca a strascico con una rete speciale, la sciabica, di origine antichissima.
I cicciarelli e le tradizionali tecniche di pesca di Noli Ligure sono anche per questo presidio Slow Food . Una ghiottoneria da non perdere e da provare nei locali del borgo o nelle friggitorie locali, che fanno della cucina di questo pesce locale una delle loro specialità.
La Liguria vanta soprattutto un prodotto unico, inimitabile, un condimento dal profumo regale che affonda le sue radici nella terra, nel clima particolare: il pesto.
Il basilico ligure ha un profumo e un gusto fortemente equilibrato, viene condito con un olio extra vergine sopraffino, guarnito di pinoli dei pini marittimi.
E’ un prodotto che segue un rigido disciplinare di produzione e può fregiarsi dell’etichetta DOP (denominazione di origine protetta).
L’ingrediente fondamentale di questa salsa è ovviamente il basilico genovese.
