Rome the Eternal City, is the capital and largest city of Italy and of the Lazio region. It is famous for being the home of the ancient Roman Empire, the Seven Hills, La Dolce Vita (the sweet life), the Vatican City and Three Coins in the Fountain.
Rome, as a millennia-long center of power, culture (having been the cradle of one of the globe's greatest civilisations ever) and religion, has exerted a huge influence over the world in its roughly 2800 years of existence.
The historic centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With wonderful palaces, thousand-year-old churches, grand Romantic ruins, opulent monuments, ornate statues and graceful fountains, Rome has an immensely rich historical heritage and cosmopolitan atmosphere, making it one of Europe's and the world's most visited, famous, influential and beautiful capitals.
Today, Rome has a growing nightlife scene and is also seen as a shopping heaven, being regarded as one of the fashion capitals of the world (some of Italy's oldest jewelry and clothing establishments were founded in the city).

Rome is one the most beautiful cities in the world; every year millions of tourists come from around the world to admire the treasures and masterpieces of Roman art and architecture.
But a trip to the Eternal City can be eternally confusing for first-time visitors. This guide will make it easier to uncover Rome, offering lots of practical advice that will help you discover and enjoy the city in all its glory.

Rome is without doubt one the most beautiful cities in the world; every year millions of tourists come from around the world to admire the treasures and masterpieces of Roman art and architecture.
Rome is an enchanting city where you'll discover a romantic blend of culture and history spiced up with a vibrant street and nightlife.
Add in to the mix delicious gastronomy and excellent Italian wines, and you have an inspiring and beautiful destination that our Rome travel guide will help you make the most of.

Because Rome is such a huge tourist draw, choose the date for your trip carefully.
The best times of the year to visit are April, May, and late September through October.
In the depths of summer, the heat and the crowds make the city nearly unbearable.

August in particular should be avoided because this is the month that the entire country of Italy seems to go on vacation. Traveling too late or too early in the year can also be risky because the opening hours for many attractions are shorter, and some are closed completely.

Rome is a huge city with several district articles containing sightseeing, restaurant, nightlife and accommodation listings — consider printing them all.
Young couples love to throw three coins into Trevi Fountain, climb the Spanish Steps or enjoy a latte in Piazza Navona.

At Vatican City, visitors can visit St Peter's Cathedral and enjoy its beautiful fountains, statues and dome.  Don't miss the masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael at the Vatican Museum!

Rome Italy has tourist attractions for all tastes. Hotel accommodation is available throughout the city.
Excellent rail service is available to Rome from many parts of Europe. Many people enjoy a Mediterranean cruise, after visiting the city.

Rome's two main airports are Leonardo da Vinci Airport (Fiumicino) and Ciampino Airport. Flights to Rome are available from London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and most other major cities.

Vatican City (Citta del Vaticano), also known as with the Holy See (Santa Sede)
The Vatican City is the world's smallest sovereign state and is situated entirely within the city of Rome. Sprawling over a hill west of the River Tiber, Vatican City is famed for the sights of St Peter's Church, St Peter's Square, the Vatican itself, the Vatican Garden and of course the magnificent St Peter's Basilica. Near St Peter's stands the Vatican Palace, the Pope's residence.
Among the principal features of the Palace are the Stanze, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museum, containing major works of art and valuable pictures.
The Vatican City is the latest and only current Papal state in existence and the temporal seat of the Pope, head of the worldwide Catholic Church. Situated within the city of Rome in Italy, the Vatican is the world's smallest state. Outside the Vatican City itself, 13 buildings in Rome and Castel Gandolfo, the Pope's summer residence, also enjoy extraterritorial rights.

Once it ruled the Western World, and even the partial, scattered ruins of that awesome empire, of which Rome was the capital, are today among the most overpowering sights on earth.
To walk the Roman Forum, to view the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Appian Way—these are among the most memorable, instructive, and illuminating experiences in all of travel.
To see evidence of a once-great civilization that no longer exists is a humbling experience that everyone should have.
As a visitor to Rome, you will be constantly reminded of this city’s extraordinary history.
Take the time to get away from the crowds to explore the intimate piazzas and lesser basilicas in the back streets of Trastevere and the centro storico.
Indulge in eno-gastronomic pursuits at coffee bars, trattorias, enotecas and gelaterias. Have a picnic in Villa Borghese or climb to the top of the Gianicolo for million-dollar views. Rome is so compact that without planning too much, you’ll end up stumbling across its monuments its simpler pleasures.
Walk the streets of Rome, and the city will be yours.

ROMA CITTA' ETERNA

Vatican City officially Vatican City State is an independent city-state enclaved within Rome, Italy. Established with the Lateran Treaty (1929), it is distinct from, yet under "full ownership, exclusive dominion, and sovereign authority and jurisdiction" of the Holy See (Latin: Sancta Sedes).
With an area of 49 hectares (121 acres) and a population of about 825, it is the smallest sovereign state in the world by both area and population.
The Vatican City is an ecclesiastical or sacerdotal-monarchical state (a type of theocracy) ruled by the pope who is the bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church. The highest state functionaries are all Catholic clergy of various national origins. Since the return of the popes from Avignon in 1377, they have generally resided at the Apostolic Palace within what is now Vatican City, although at times residing instead in the Quirinal Palace in Rome or elsewhere.

Within the Vatican there are numerous interesting attractions to visit, but the best are the following: St. Peter’s Square (Piazza San Pietro), St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, where the Sistine chapel is located.
To visit the Vatican City and see its top attractions, we recommend spending at least a whole morning.
If you’d like to learn about its history and surprising facts and figures, we recommend booking an English-speaking guided tour of the Vatican. You can also check out our Rome Combo tours.

Maccarone m’hai provocato e io te distruggo maccarone!
Veni, vidi, vici direbbe Giulio Cesare.
